100 watt highbeams

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by J. Frank Ferguson, Dec 14, 2003.

  1. Anyone had any experience with running 55/100watt bulbs on a
95 Civic? Seems quite a bit cheaper than the PIAA route and from
what I read the results with the PIAA's vary.
    Thanks

If you are interested in a lighting experts opinion, take it over to
rec.autos.driving and post there. The resident expert is Daniel Stern,
    (http://lighting.mbz.org/) he knows his stuff.

And that applies to just about any car, not just a 95 civic. ;-)

The light output of my 95 civic was poor. I have upgraded the wiring with
HELLA relays according to the (already mentioned) DS's site. The light
output with the stock bulbs was noticeably better. Don't buy blue tinted
bulbs. I now run 100/90W clear bulbs and have no problems with melting
lamps (although I run Narva 60/55W 48881 clear bulbs during the summer).
    Light output now is good.

High wattage NARVA 12V 100/90W 48901 / Made in Germany / Not for use in
    Europe.

DO NOT run high wattage bulbs on stock wiring.

I like these lights... if I feel that my lights are too dimmed, can I
install lights like these to make the road brighter?

You could put in a pair of Sylvania Xenarc 1010. Lots of light and DOT
compliant for use with your low beams.

I give up: Why do you change to lower wattage in the summer?

OK, I know what I do is stupid but the lamps get hot with the 100W bulbs. I
can touch the lamps during the winter but they are too hot to touch during
the summer. In order not to melt or deform them I use the wattage the lamps
were designed for. Changing the bulbs also requires some aiming adjustment
but practice makes perfect and I can change the bulbs and aim them in 5' or
    so.
