1990 Honda Accord - Glue Side Door Upholstery

Discussion in 'Accord' started by John R. Reyes, Mar 3, 2008.

  1. One of my inside door panel's cloth upholstery has begun to fall off. What
kind of glue should I purchase (or does it have to be applied with a heat
gun)to make the repair myself? Should I just take it an upholstery shop?
Would like the repair to look nice, the car is in very good condition
    otherwise.

    TIA,

    Ray

Ack! Choke! An HTML posting! Hoch-tooey! Spit!

Contact cement should do just fine. However, if your door panels are
anything like mine, you'll have trouble getting the edges to stick
properly. An upholststery shop would probably be the best, but would also
be most expensive. You may want to try getting an entire door panel from a
    wrecking yard.

  3. Ray,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I tried about every glue
known to man to put the cloth panels back on my '90 accord, and none
of them lasted longer than a few months. I tried:

    3M 90
    3m 77
    3m 76
    Super Trim Adhesive
    weldwood contact cement
    And others I can't remember

I'm told the panels are made from a Low E type of plastic. Don't
actually know what that means other than adhesives do not want to
    stick to it.

I live in a very hot climate, but I'm not sure that has anything to do
    with it.

After several years of messing with it, I discarded the panels and
bought a textured spray paint that is meant to adhere to plastics and
painted the area where the cloth panels used to be. It turned out
great. I did this two years ago, still looks great. Can't remember
the brand, but got it at Lowes, and it matched the grey interior panel
perfectly with just the right contrast.

If you find something that actually works, post here, I would be
interested even though I'm satisfied with my solution and won't
    revisit the cloth panels.
