I have purchased a 1990 Honda Accord and the heating unit does not produce
any heat. I have changed the thermostat and this is not the problem. How
would I find out whether it is the heater core or the heater control valve?

Check the actual temperature control knob, the shafts are plastic and
habitually crack, giving you the impression they are adjusting the
temperature, however, they are not turning the actual control for the heater
    valve

Check the heater hoses and make sure they are there. The previous owner may
have looped it back to hide a leaking heater core....

maybe the heater core was bypassed by previous owner (its a quick fix if
you have a leaky heater core) check to see that there are heat hoses going
into the fire wall and not joined together
