1991 Accord oil leakage

  1. Had this exact same thing happen on my 91 Accord. New P/S seal fixed it
    right up.

What seal in the P/S system was causing the leak in your case? Was this also
the seal on the pump shaft?

Yesterday, using the info given by Arthur Russell, I checked for leakage
signs in the P/S system. I did not find any oil coming through the holes of
the pulley. The outside face of the pulley is clean and dry.
On the otherside of the P/S pump, on the side of the mounting bracket it is
slightly oil contaminated. But this is also close to where the bracket is
mounted to the engine. This made me wondering whether the P/S pump might be
leaking near its mountin brackets. It looks like the pump has a cap / lid
that can come off. Is this what you would call the front pump cover?
I will clean the area around the P/S pump bracket and keep a close watch on
    that.

  3. Clarification: Maybe no sir to the original poster, but yes sir to
Trojan. Oil in the plug cavities is not coming from a power steering
    leak.

  4. It's been several years but I'm pretty sure it was the seal around the
pulley and it was sucking in air and foaming the fluid. I didn't fix it
myself as I was moving from FL to CT noticed it on the road and had it fixed
right away when we got to CT. I think it was $100 to have it fixed at the
Honda dealer. Arthurs post sparked my memory. I remember not having a
visble leak just overflowing the reservoir (very foamy fluid coming out).

    Thanks for your info.
I've cleaned the area around the bracket of the P/S pump and de pump itself.
I'm pretty sure it is the pump. I will check under the hood with the engine
running in the weekend (when it is light outside). Then I can also check
    whether the fluid is foaming.
Also I contacted my (very trusty) dealer. The very experienced mechanic
(working on Honda's since '78) never had seen any problems with a P/S pump
in a honda. He told me a whole (new) pump costs Euro 456, before tax. So
total for the pump would be Euro 547 (we have 20% tax), so about $438.
He could also order new seals for the pump, which of course is the best
    option.
I guess it is then probably best to replace all seals in the P/S pump....

    Regards,
    Jan
