I had a shop do a Timing Belt replacement and afterwards I found oil
all around the timing Belt Cover. The car is not mine, it's my son's
girfriend's so I didn't find out about the problem for a couple of
months. Today I took the car back to the shop and I was told that the
balance shaft seals on Hondas fail all the time.

Is the mechanic correct or is he blowing smoke?

He quoted me a lot more money than the timing belt replacement job
    cost.

When he replaced the timing belt he also replaced the balance belt as
they are both under the same cover.

  2. There is a balance shaft seal *retainer* available for retrofit to earlier
    models. Parts are under $10.

    Installation slightly more.
