The accelerator sticks when I start from a stop and some times even when I go to shift to higher gears.
It seems to be getting worse and is worse when its colder outside. I have read other postings for similiar problems
and they noted carbon or gum build up in the throttle area and the throttle plate sticks against the body. Is this
what the problem might be and how does one clean it? There is considerable slack in the accelerator cable could this
also be a source of the problem. This is my first Honda and I must say that everything seems to requre a lot more
attention then the US built vehicles.

You're aware that your civic was built in the US, right?

Could be the throttle cable sticking. Loosen it at the the throttle body. Reduce most slack. Tighten it. If the jacket of
that cable twisted, it would put a lot of friction on the cable inside.

Yes, that is most likely the problem.

You just need a toothbrush, some throttle body cleaner and some clean rags.

The most difficult part is taking the intake apart to get at the throttle
plate. Squirt the cleaner ON THE RAG or toothbrush NOT directly into the
throttle body, then scrub and wipe. That's all.

For more info, go to www.google.com
and type in these terms as you see them here, including the quotes:
    cleaning "throttle body"

Then you can try doing the same thing here: www.groups.google.com

That may be because the throttle is sticking part-way open. There ought to
be some slack in any case. It should not be tight.

No more or less than any other vehicle.

If you have that many deposits in your throttle body, there is a
possibility that your PCV valve is at least partially plugged, leading to
oil being pumped into the intake through the valve cover breather. This is
usually due to neglecting oil changes at the correct intervals.
