    Hi all,

I have a 2001 honda civic. I am just curious to know when to change
the gear to 2 nd . As far as i know we need to put in 2nd gear when we
are driving on snow, or starting on very steep hill.
My question is if i am driving at 45 miles , can i change the gear to
    2nd on a steep hill?

    Thanks in Advance.

If it's an automatic tranny, it would be best to let the tranny handle
    the downshifting.

On the slick stuff, downshifting when you're already in middle of a
situation is perhaps a bad idea, unless you can knock off a very quick
but smooth downshift. Most primitive tiptronic do not rev match and thus
have poor downshifting capabilities. Upsetting your car when traction is
at a premium is not a good idea.

However, if you are simply taking precautions, for a potentially bad
situation, going to a lower gear in order to give yourself more control
is highly recommended. The lower gear and higher rev's will allow the
car to capitalize on engine braking. Controlling the car's braking
capability with the accelerator pedal would require some experience and
a smart right foot.. If you don't feel up to the challenge,
    ABS/traction-contorl is highly recommended.
