I want to replace my door speakers in my civic. I've talked to two
different guys who install for the same company. One said that he didn't
recommend changing them b/c he has had people come back in b/c of the
doors leaking rain water in and ruining the after market speakers. The
other guy said that he had never heard of this and that he has never had
any problems. I'm just wondering what i should do and if anyone has any
    advice to give me.
    Thanks

I don't know about the 2001 civic specifically, but there is usually a
water proof plastic box that holds the factory speaker. Often times the
after market speakers are too deep to fit in this box, so installers
will simply remove the box and mount the speakers directly to the door
sheet metal. In this case, the speakers will not be protected against
    water flowing through the door.

On my '94 I had the problem of the boxes being to shallow for my new
speakers. I was able to get a set of trim rings that moved the speakers
out about 4 mm or so, and that was enough to make them fit. Doing this,
you have to make sure you don't move the speakers so far out that they
    hit the factory speaker grille.
