2002 Accord Manual "GR-UNK"...

Discussion in 'Accord' started by Andrew Bourke, Apr 22, 2004.

  1. OK, 2002 Accord 4dr 4cyl, 5 speed is booked in next week so I can take a
technician for a spin. Car has only 6000 Km (3750 mi) on it (laaast one
on the lot!) and it is now making a "not quite clunk, but not quite a
full grind" going from 1st to second. Doesn't happen on the 3 -> 2
downshift. Happens going into second and not coming out of first ->
    neutral.

We can avoid it by waiting in neutral and then pulling it into 2nd.
Sort of counting "one Mississippi" in between.

Is this a synchro thing? If we start to pull it into 2nd and wait at
the first sign of resistance, there is a vibration in the stick like
something is spinning. This spinning stops, and then we can pull it
    into 2nd with no problem.

    Thoughts?

  2. Does it do this even when warmed up? If only when cold it's somewhat
normal to get an occasional rough shift into 2nd and pausing in neutral is
the only way to avoid it completely. It does sound like a synchro thing or
    maybe a bad/bent shift-fork.

Yup - even when warm. From dawn to dusk... another thing I noticed
that may be connected is that it sometimes seems to "pop" out of 1st.
Not all by itself, but when you pull it out of gear (clutch fully
dis-engaged) it's not smooth. Kind of like when you pull it out of gear
    without using the clutch...

    Thanks for the reply!

My 2003 Accord 5-speed does the exact same thing sort of popping out when
shifting out of first. I also have trouble getting it into second gear from
first just like you described. I had the dealer check it out and they took
it for a test drive and said it's fine and that I was just shifting too
fast. I decided to take their work for it for the time being. My car only
has 30,000 km on it so there's tons of warranttee left if it gets any worse.
I'd appreciate if you could post any info you find out about this though
because if it's fixeable I'd like to be able to bring that info to my
    dealer.

Will do. I have a feeling that the dealer will give me the same line.
I dunno, call it customer's intuition...
    :0)

Can we get a list of respondents who can claim that this is *not* a
    normal condition?

Yep, It happened on my 2001 5sp EX Honda accord. got so fed up going back to
the Honda garage 20 times, that at one stage they said this was
    characteristic of this model!

So I sold the dam thing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
