OK, 2002 Accord 4dr 4cyl, 5 speed is booked in next week so I can take a
technician for a spin. Car has only 6000 Km (3750 mi) on it (laaast one
on the lot!) and it is now making a "not quite clunk, but not quite a
full grind" going from 1st to second. Doesn't happen on the 3 -> 2
downshift. Happens going into second and not coming out of first ->
    neutral.

We can avoid it by waiting in neutral and then pulling it into 2nd.
Sort of counting "one Mississippi" in between.

Is this a synchro thing? If we start to pull it into 2nd and wait at
the first sign of resistance, there is a vibration in the stick like
something is spinning. This spinning stops, and then we can pull it
    into 2nd with no problem.

    Thoughts?

You could try double-clutching and see if it goes away. Of course it
may take you the same amount of time to double clutch as it does to
count one mississippi. Which, would not add a lot of value to such a
test. Its just a thought since double clutching is what one does when
    there is no synchro.
