    Greetings all!
I'm getting ready to buy a new car and I'm curious to know what the (I
assume computer limited) top speed for the above mentioned car is...
with the manual transmission & a four cylinder. I'm planning on doing a
lot of highway driving and I like to "stretch my legs a little". =)

    Cheers!

  2. Not too sure. Up here in Canada I don't think there is a limiter. I've
had mine up to 185 kph but started getting nervous about losing the
    license.

The Accord V6 coupe 65 spd reportedly is governed to 135. I should imagine
an I4 EX manual would be around 115-120.

The governor is set to match the speed rating of the OEM tires (also
redline, but usually that¹s not the problem). If it came with "H" rated
tires, it will be set to at least 130. If the original tires are S or T,
then it will be set around 115.

    I had my Canadian 2003 LX-G 4 cylinder 5-speed cut out at 205 km/h (128
MPH). I didn't have the OEM tires on but my Michelin Artic Alpin winter
tires which I think are only rated for 180. Pretty stupid in hindsight but
I didn't have a blowout so I guess I got away with it. Also didn't hold
that speed for long enough to hurt the tires (or get caught by the cops ;)

Does that suggest that the setting can be changed? Just curious. I
don't expect this to limit my driving. : - )

Top speed for a 6speed manual trans 6 cyl is 161mph...Limiter is set
at around 140-145...............Makes no difference about the
tires....cant say about the 4 banger.....

Different ROM in the ECU (i.e. You have to "chip" it).

Chris, you doubt what? The top speed? Do your homework,
then come back and we can discuss it.

  11. Yes, the top speed. 160 is about the top speed of a Corvette, not an
    Accord.

  12. I've got some Hercules Z rated, some I'm good there.

Well, I don't find any reference to a top speed of 161 mph. Enlighten us -
    what is your source?

Top speed can be somewhat unrealistic. Car & Driver tested the 5th gen
Prelude at 139. That would be at redline -- 7400. I would not like to run
my Prelude for very long at that speed. 125 -130 would be more the
ticket -- in more ways than one.

Not disagreeing with you, but I wonder what the coefficient of drag (Cd) is
for both cars? Since aerodynamics plays as much a part (if not more) than
HP at high speeds, it be interesting to compare the two vehicles. I'm sure
the 'vette is rather slippery, but it's aerodynamics are designed to plant
the car at speed for secure handling, whereas the Accord's aerodynamics are
designed to let it slip through the air without requiring much power.

Aerodynamic drag is determined solely by Cd. It is the product of Cd
and frontal area. I would imagine that the frontal area of a Vette is
significantly lower than that of an Accord. That, plus the obvious
horsepower advantage of the Vette, virtually guarantees that the Vette
will top out higher than the Accord.

In any case, the Accord's top speed is limited by its tires. Auto
manufacturers these days electronically limit the top speed of a given
car model based on the speed rating of the stock tires, e.g. 130 mph for
H-rated tires, which are pretty common in the Accord's market segment.

Oops, I should read before I post. Please ignore the post I just made,
which says basically the same thing.

You're probably right. I've just seen enough things in life that go
contrary to what one would think, to be able to question things like this.
    ;-)

You're right about the frontal area thing - I should've mentioned it. After
all, a GSXR1300 (Hayabusa) has a horrible Cd, but a small frontal area. It
totally smokes the 'vette, and does so with 1/3 or so of the 'vette's HP.
Heck, my lowly SV650 would give a 'vette a good run in the quarter mile, but
then we're not talking about top speed anymore.
That's pretty obvious - I thought everyone knew that by now???
I assumed we were talking about non-speed-limited vehicles (theoretical, I
know, but so is most bench racing).
