Does anyone have any previews of the 2004 Civics? Honda is very good at not
giving any info on future designs and options compared to other cars. I
heard there were going to be some updates to the options offered like fog
lights, bra, mud guards and aero kits, but not much to design or engine etc.

Mostlikely, the same as 2003 until 2005...
    New generation in 2006 probably.

If I was Honda, I'd hustle on the redesign, unless they want to resign their
standing in the sport compact arena to Toyota. If Honda is not going put the
sports back into the Civic, I personally am not interested in another boring
compact sedan/coupe. In fact, what would be the point when a Hyundai can be had
    for much less...

Not to worry. For those who haven't noticed the long term Honda trends of
design, they alternate each generation between conservative and sporty. The
next Civic (06) will be much sportier than the current model. No big
changes until then. But in '06...you'll be impressed, not just in looks,
    but performance as well.

That definitely would be good news. My aged 98 Hatch is well overdue for
an upgrade. The only thing that would satisfy my gluttonous appetite
would be another Hatch packing basically the same dimension and wheel
base as the older Hatch's while weighing in at around 2500 lbs. A more
solid chassis (something comparable to the new Celica), Honda's vaunted
double wishbone up front and back, RSX-S 200hp engine. And, a driving
position suited for taller customer (the shorty's can have the Accord).
Ground clearance should be generous even with lowered springs.

so what are the "sporty ones"? my 98 i *guess* is more conservatively styled
than the gen before that, since it has a grill. but the 88-91s arent
dowdy... i like em, especially the 2nd gen CRX. so that would make the boxy
gen before that the sporty ones? nah.
eh, i wouldnt hold my breath. it sure would be nice tho. bring back the
"real" Si hatchback! have a luxury package, and a sport package. and useable
    hatch room! GTI fighter, anyone?

im also hoping for a smaller honda than the civic, to go up against the
mini, but also compete with scion and the (heh) echo. maybe the honda city?

What I think Honda should do is offer more options such as a high
performance package or HID lights or navigation etc. Just because I am
thrifty, doesnt mean I don't want to spend a little more on something
specific. I would never spend 30k on a car!

The 91 to 95 Civic might have looked more sporty, but I don't think they were
strong enough to hold up against constant abuse. My sister has a 93 Si Hatch.
It's a sponky car but the chassis dynamic can't compare to my 98 Hatch. Also,
the 99 and 00 Civic gave rise to the Si(R) which is perhaps the most sporty
Civic ever made. The GTI is a very upscale appearance with a very capable 1.8T
engine. Honda has a better engine (Acura's 200hp Type-S) and a better suspension
system (double wishbone) which is the ingredients for a very formidable Civic.
