2004 Honda Odyssey Ex Tapping Sound

Discussion in 'Odyssey' started by Debasis Goswami, Dec 25, 2003.

  1. Hello Folks,

I am new to this news group as I bought my first Honda a month ago and
that is a 2004 Odyssey Ex. I have a problem not solved yet. When idling or
in reverse gear I hear low pitch tapping sound from somewhere rear of the
car. It sounds like the car is backfiring. I am surprised and no idea why
a new car should sound like that. It happens regardless of the gasoline
octane rating. I have tried higher grade gasoline. The mileage seems to be
fine as advertised for this car. Any idea? Anybody had this problem?

    Thanks,
    Debasis.

  2. Does this happen when first started, only after the car has run for a
while, or all the time when at low RPM? It might be a valve in the vapor
recovery system fluttering. Have you maybe overfilled the tank at some
point and gotten liquid into the vapor lines? It's been reported to be
normal to hear odd noises, tapping and moaning, for several minues from
those valves after switching the engine off.

  3. So far I have noticed it only during low RPM. The sound is not loud and
therefore there is no way to detect it without instrument while moving on
    the road. It happens -

    1) When the car is just started and idling

    2) Increases (I think) when put on reverse gear.

    3) After reaching my destnation after 1 hour of driving.

if the car is that new then bring it to the dealer as the warranty
    should cover it....
