Are you filling up at the same station / pump each time? I've noticed my
Hondas are sensitive to the position at the pump. Some pumps my car is
on a level surface, & others angled up or down. It makes a difference in
how much gas you can add.

Yes it does, but over several months, that difference pales in comparison
to driving style and ambient temperature.

There is a story from the fifties, when VW Bugs were first sold here in the
U.S. One Bug owner's neighbors got tired of him bragging about the gas
mileage, and took it upon themselves to fill his tank every night. After he
got to reporting 75 miles or so per gallon, they reversed the process, so he
was getting about 10. I imagine he felt the same way you did.

The 2003 Civic, US-ULEV, has a plastic tank that is formed in place to gain
maximum volume, and might have portions jutting out as you mention,
unfillable. But the plastic is permeable, so the SULEV, to eliminate
evaporative emissions, has a steel tank, less conforming to the space, and
holds 45L instead of 50L. Even the steel tank has a noticeable hump along
the back that is above the level of the filler entry.

And if you filled up on a summer morning your car was sitting in a
puddle of gas when you went to go home in the afternoon / evening
    (assuming you had a job).
