2006 Civic mileage too low?

I recently picked up a 2006 Civic EX and have noticed that after two
tanks of gas, that the mileage is about 9km/liter. This is a wee bit
low. Even my 2000 Accord generaly maintained a 10km/liter mileage.
With the smaller Civic and smaller engine, I was expecting this to
jump to 12-13km/liter but the opposite occured. Guess I'll take it in
for a check next week, but was wondering if anyone else out there with
the 2006 Civic has noticed this or has gotten near the theoretical
    mileage for it?

    TIA,

    Drew

  2. I have the 06 Coupe LX and I was told that your true mileage may not be
known for about 3000 miles (can't convert that to metric for you). I
was very by-the-book on the break in period of 600 miles, and the two
tank ratings I've done were 27.9 and then 30.2. Don't know if that
    helps.

  3. Is this city, highway, or mixed? Are you a lead-foot driver?

After about 5000km or so and with good driving habits, it should be broken
in and the mileage should improve. You should take it for a few fairly
lengthy highway runs during the break-in period.

Keep us informed. I think that many of us would be interested to confirm
whether the new Civic gets close to the EPA estimates and whether it will
    better the older Civics.

1 US gallon = 3.785 liters. So, your 2006 Civic EX is giving 9km/liter,
which is 34 mpg, which I think is OK.

given that we're stuck with this low calorific value "reformulated"
garbage gasoline that's been adulterated with ethanol, i'd say that's right!

  7. How in the hell did you come up with 34mpg from 9km/litre?

    1 US gallon = 3.785 litres
    1 litre = (1 / 3.785) = 0.264 US gallons
    1 km = 0.621 miles

    Therefore: 9 km / 1 litre
    = (9 x 0.621) miles / (1 x 0.264) US gallons
    = 5.589 miles / 0.264 US gallons
= 21.17 miles per US gallon

Mixed, about 150km/100miles highway & 50km/30miles city per week.
I'll probably take it on a roadtrip from Toronto to Montreal before
the snows start, and see what it's like after that.

    Thanks,

That's about what I was expecting, but my first 500km/300miles comes
out to something like 21-22 MPG. :-(

During this break-in period, I've tried to keep the RPMs under 3000
whenever possible. Typicaly the max RPMs I'm putting on the car is
about 4000 and that's only when I merge onto the highway.

  10. I'd ask your dealer about it, then. It shouldn't be that bad.

I have never been noticed so much in all my life since I got this car.
People keep looking at it "Is that the new Civic? Wow!" Just had the
teen chick at the Taco Bell drive-thru notice it. Amazing.

I agree. And 21 mpg is terrible. I currently get 39 mpg in my 2002 Civic
LX coupe standard. That is the average over the life of the vehicle in
    combined city and highway miles.

Is your 06 EX have an automatic or standard transmission?.

In the previous Civics, the Automatic were not able to simulate EPA,
especially in the city. However, the standard tranny was able to match or
surpass the EPA, even in the city. I can vouch for this, since my 98 5spd
was able to do 700km/41L of mixed driving (but mostly highway), which
happens to be my all-time best...and required extra attention in order to
keep the revs as low as possible.

The 06's 22MPG seems extremely low, regardless of brake-in or transmission
type. Try coasting to make sure the brakes aren't dragging. Avoid
out-of-the-way gas station (If you have to wait for the pumps to clear up in
a bigger station, it's probably a good thing). Consumption tends to vary
between premium and regular gas. Consider that the 06 is putting a lot of
technology to work to optimize on the pre 3000 rpm range, the type/quality
of gas could have the significant impact on efficiency. Also, are the tires
    properly inflated?

btw, if your initial fill-up was done by the dealership, then there's no
control and the mileage estimate on the first fill-up doesn't count.

this person "Drew" live. I could be Canada or Australia or someother
country, since he menitioned 9Km/liter. In such a case the
specification of Civic EX could be different, in that country.
Drew: Can you please tell us the number of Cyls. HP, and weight of the
    car.

You know it. When I first saw the preliminary 06 Civic pictures a few
months ago, I thought to myself "Looks like it should fly, not drive."
Even felt more so when I sat in the driver's seat the first time.

How many miles on this thing?

9km/liter is 34mpg on a US gallon. That's awfully darn good for a car
that's not even broken in yet!!!!

Your car will not get even close to its maximum gas mileage until about
10,000 miles (you can call that 15K km). Until you reach that odometer
    reading, don't worry about it.

Oh, and do NOT change your oil for the first time until the manual says to!
You will do the engine NO favors by changing it too soon!

  19. Um, I think you forgot to convert the kilometres to miles. :)

    9 km / 1 litre
    = (9 x 0.621) miles / (1 x 0.264) US gallons
    = 5.589 miles / 0.264 US gallons

    1 gallon = 3.7854 liters.

    9km per liter x 3.7854 = 34.0686.

    I made no mistakes.
