    5 Tips On Making Your Car More Fuel Efficient

    With gas prices sky high most individuals who drive are interested in ways they can make their car more fuel efficient and save as much money as possible. While there are no fuel saving tips that will keep your car full of gas without filling up, there are some tips that really can help you save money on fuel over the long run. All of these tips focus on making your car more fuel efficient.

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #1 Drive When You Crank Up This might seem obvious, but as soon as you crank up your car you should drive off. However, many people crank up and leave the car idling for a while. Instead of this, when you crank up drive off and only keep your car running when it is absolutely necessary.

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #2 Don't Ride the Break Many drivers hit the break more often than is necessary. Additionally there are quite a few drivers that slow down for a braking car when they could easily switch lanes. Not riding the break can increase your fuel efficiency by up to 30%, so this is a great tip you should follow.

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #3 Turn Off Your Car If you are going to be stopping for more than 10 minutes you should switch off your car to keep fuel efficiency at its peak and not burn more gas than is necessary.

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #4 Don't Turn Off Your Car If you are only stopping for a brief moment or less than 5 minutes then don't turn off your car because the amount of gas used to crank up is more than you would burn in that short period of time.

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #5 Inflate Tires Properly Too many drivers never think of their tires, unless one goes flat. However, having tires that are properly inflated can save fuel and make your car more fuel efficient, saving you money. Because of this, you should check your tire pressure on a regular basis.

    While gas prices don't seem like they will be dipping considerably in the next few months every tip to help you make your car more fuel efficient is helpful. So, follow the above fuel tips and you will see that over time your car really is more fuel efficient.

    I do not think this is true, at least for Hondas. I believe I saw
    reports last year, when gas was around $4 a gallon, of people stopping
    their engines at stoplights lasting just a couple minutes, and it made
    a big difference in gas savings. I have a friend who tried this and
    saw a big increase in MPG.

    It seems to me that several vehcle manufacturers made cars that would
    turn off the engine if idles for more than a set time, unless overrid
    by the driver. That disagres with one of your ideas.

  6. 5 Tips On Making Your Car More Fuel Efficient

    <JS>
    Drive at a speed where the tach does not exceed the idle speed when cold. If
    the engine runs at 1500 during the first two or three minutes, drive at that
    speed or below from your house to the freeway.

    </JS>

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #2 Don't Ride the Break Many drivers hit the break more
    often than is necessary. Additionally there are quite a few drivers that
    slow down for a braking car when they could easily switch lanes. Not riding
    the break can increase your fuel efficiency by up to 30%, so this is a great
    tip you should follow.

    <JS>
    It's BRAKE, not break. Your credibility just went down the shitter.

    Gas and brake with the RIGHT FOOT ONLY, clutch with the left foot if you
    have a clutch, else leave the left foot firmly planted on the floor. NEVER
    use your left foot to operate the brake -- this leads to riding the brake.

    </JS>

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #3 Turn Off Your Car If you are going to be stopping for
    more than 10 minutes you should switch off your car to keep fuel efficiency
    at its peak and not burn more gas than is necessary.

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #4 Don't Turn Off Your Car If you are only stopping for

    the amount of gas used to crank up is more than you would burn in that short
    period of time.

    <JS>
    That's a complete crock of shit with modern automobiles. It might be true
    with older carburated cars, but fuel injection is far more efficient, and
    the biggest problem with turning your car off in the drive thru lane is that
    this is the time it decides to not start again (been there, done that).

    </JS>

    Fuel Efficiency Tip #5 Inflate Tires Properly Too many drivers never think
    of their tires, unless one goes flat. However, having tires that are

    http://www.tips4you.org/car/

    Tip #6, follow on the freeway at least 3 seconds behind the car in front,
    and watch 3 or 4 cars in front of him to see if anybody is putting the
    brakes on, if so then lift off of the gas pedal and coast to where the
    traffic stops. If the traffic starts moving again before you get there, you
    get to proceed without stopping.

    If the traffic is doing 70+ and you're following close, then you have to do
    what everybody else does, and this might mean that you have to come to a
    full stop for a couple of seconds. But if you are following at 3 or 4
    seconds and notice that the traffic is stopping, you get to coast and in all
    liklihood can resume without coming to a full stop. A bonus is that the
    asshole tailgating you gets to benefit from your slow and steady speed
    changes, and this might be the difference in getting to work or getting your
    bumper bashed in.

    Tip # 7 (and probably the best), don't drive like a maniac speed demon. You
    don't need to drive like the little old lady from Pasedena, but you don't
    need to drive like Jimmy Johnson either. Roll on the gas and brake instead
    of jab at the pedals. This will make your passengers more comfortable too.

    I'm not sure I agree with the idea of shutting the car off in traffic, but
    shutting it off in the drive thru lane makes loads of sense.

    Agree - shutting it car off in traffic could be a real safety issue.

    From Transport Canada:
    "AVOID UNNECESSARY IDLING: If you’re stopped for more than 60 seconds,
    except while in traffic, turn off your engine. This has minimal impact on
    the starter system, and idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than
    it takes to restart your vehicle. Unnecessary idling for 10 minutes a day
    uses about 5 percent more fuel over the year."

    It takes very little energy to start an engine. And the energy comes
    from electricity from the battery, rather than directly from gasoline
    (of course, the engine recharges the battery with the alternator). It
    takes a lot less energy to turn an engine for 1 sec than 30 sec. If
    one does this at every stoplight, though, the gasoline savings may
    justify the cost of a new starter, however.

    Instead of using the drive-thru, parking the car then walking into the
    fast food joint should save even more gas.

    That assumes the car cares where you park it. ;-)

    You could save even more gas by not sitting your fat ass down in front of a
    SuperSize pile of Big Macs and french fries -- and extra large Diet Coke --
    several times a week. But I digress ...

    What?

    They operate under that condition on an electric motor and battery power,
    and don't restart the gasoline engine until they get up to speed, or the
    battery condition deteriorates. That's the whole point of Hybrid -- it can
    go in Stop-N-Go traffic for many miles on the batteries. It does not care
    that the stop is a traffic light or a pile-up on the freeway, all it knows
    is that it isn't moving, or is moving slowly, and the batteries are strong
    enough that the gasoline engine is not needed.

    This has nothing at all to do with the premise that they are equipped with
    more durable starters. They may or may not be so equipped, but that is not
    why the gasoline engine is switched off.

    You're correct, of course. My point was that to start a gasoline
    engine many times, the starter has to be more durable than a regular
    starter. In fact, the Prius uses one of its motor-generators as a
    starter. I was just using hybrids as an example of engines that may
    have more durable starters than normal engines. Not all hybrids have
    engines that stop at stoplights, and not all hybrids are able to be
    driven on battery power alone, either. It depends on the car or truck.

    Not entirely true. While it doesn't matter a whit if your car is
    garged in Austin in August, a car parked in the driveway in Indy in
    February might benefit from a little run in to get the oil "up to
    temp". But not long.
    Right. Switching lanes is likely to get you whacked if you aren't
    looking. And if you are looking while the guy ahead is braking, you
    could whack him when his braking goes from drag to stomp.

    But you can back peddle and still keep your distance.

    And, for such an automotive expert, it's "brake", not "break".

    #3 is kind of right, but #4 is off by a bunch. The numbers are
    usually around 2 minutes. If you're idling for 8 minutes you're
    tossing a bunch of money out the tailpipe.

    The 5 minute rule used to apply when US cars were 300+ CID V8s with
    four barrel carbs.
    Gee, ya think?
