  4. My Ford Escort's starter konked at 25,000 miles with a big short, and
    the windings were coated with powder from the brushes.

    The post office made letter carriers turn off the engine at every mail
    box, and a few times a year our carrier would have to wait for a jump
    start. Apparently they weren't allowed to accept jump starts from the
    public. This is the same post office that had its trucks use snow
    tires throughout the year, even here in Phoenix.

    Older carb systems used more gas to start the car. Fuel injection
    systems with automatic choke no longer require one to push the gas
    pedal when starting.
