85 CRX Head removal

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Wolfgang Bley, Nov 16, 2003.

  1. After the broken timing belt incident I assumed damage to the valves in
this interference engine (1.5L fuel injected CRX Si 1985). I am trying to
remove the head to inspect the situation. I have removed the 7 head bolts
and 3 head nuts in the 8,9 and 10 position. I have completely removed the
intake and exhaust manifolds off their stud screws. I have removed the
distributor and water hoses. The head will not come off. I used a 6 ton jack
and piece of lumber from underneath the lip of the head to see if I could
force a separation. NOTHING ! The entire vehicle moved up! I cannot conceive
that you have to remove the rocker arm assembly. The voluminous (but not
very helpful) Chilton manual makes no mention of that. They make it sound as
if it should just lift off. Is it possible the #8,9 and 10 studs I am
looking at have to be removed somehow? HELP I am in trouble here. wolf

  3. Thank. I have read the manual and the #8,9and10 bolts stay in the block. I
will reread it but it appears my head is just stuck....
    Any suggestions? Thanks again. wolf

The head gasket stuck pretty well. I used a big flat screwdriver and pried at
the edge, corner of the head and block. Do not go too deep into them. You might
    damage the mating surfaces.

  5. Tricky business to be sure but I may have to resort to that. I have cranked
the engine after removing the rocker arm assembly to see if the compression
of the rotation might do the trick but to no avail. I can hear air leaking
off the intake manifold somewhere but the head will not budge. There is a
reference to sticking "non compressible rope" ( of all things) directly into
the combustion chamber via the spark plug orifice and then rotating the
engine to force the head off... too scared I would damage the piston to try
that. Well I need a good drink and some time away from the garage. This is
my son's car and I have lost my parking spot . I need to get this ting fixed
and get it out of MY garage! wolf.

  6. Well I got it off with sheer force. There was as "ledge" on the front
firewall side of the engine and I put a large pry bar in the slot and just
"pounded" it in and eventually it started to give way slowly at first then
more. I still used the 6 ton jack from underneath to "pop" it totally loose.
Had 4 damaged valves from the timing belt loss. Now to clean the block off
and get it back together. Later. wolf
