87 Accord - running problem with too much pedal

This is an 87 Accord LX w/auto trans and 2 bbl carb.

It will accelerate nicely to a point, but if I push the gas pedal too far it
will sputter, lose power, and the tranny can even disengage so that the
engine revs high but the car don't go. Any idea what it could be? I have
just changed both fuel filters, and done some carb cleaning running the
engine and spraying carb cleaner (through the horns). The plugs and wires
look Ok.

One thing I have done in this car's recent on the road history was to add,
and then remove, an aftermarket fuel pump in line just before the carb. The
aftermarket pump was probably creating twice the fuel pressure as needed
(4-7 lbs).

It appears to me to be a fuel problem or carb. problem. I suggest that you
go to a Honda dealership and order a fuel pump made for your car. If the
new fuel pump does not solve the problem, you may need to do some more
work on the carb such as installing a carb kit. You should also adjust the
timing and change the points and adjust the points. Also--check dist. cap
for cracks.

I didn't know cars made in '87 had points.

 

Added info:
I got a pressure gauge and put it on the fuel line (otherwise going into the
carb). It looks like it can make 2 pounds of pressure. The haynes manual
has a more elaborate test for pump pressure involving removing the fuel pump
relay and shorting across 1 and 2, and I haven't quite exactly found the
relay yet, or how to remove it. But, they say 2.4 to 3.4 is what it needs
to show.

What I can't figure out is how this could have happened with my aftermarket
fuel pump in line to the carb as before. It appears the same problem was
occuring then!

 

Sounds like you have a bad tranny.

 

the throttle plate for the secondary is vacuum controlled,
check for vacumm leaks, and also check the vacuum advance
on the distributor

 

I don't usually trust after market items since they are usually made to
work with dozens of types and models of cars. They may or may not work in
conjuction with your engine and engine related parts. That's why I
suggested that you install a fuel pump from Honda Dealership that was made
for your vehicle. You could also order one from a junkyard dealer--they
are on a computer network and can get one for you even if they don't have
any wrecked vehicles identical to your vehicle on the lot.
