87 Honda Gas guage problem

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Richard Schneiderman, Feb 19, 2004.

  1. Gas guage shows full when car is cold, when it warms up, the guage reads
    properly most of the time.

What could be causing this? Will I have to take out the gas tank to
    replace this?

best left untouched. Too much hassle! Just keep track of mileage.

Probably the sending unit in the gas tank.
Yes, and that would be opening a can of worms on a car that old.
It's a big hassle, and by disturbing the tank you might well provoke
    it to start leaking.

There are two access holes in the trunk, one for the pump, and one for the
    sender.

Uhuh. And IF you have the tool and can undo the retaining ring on a
1987 tank without fracturing half-rusted metal, the car wasn't driven
    up north much.

I agree with Mista Bone. Too much hassle. But maybe Richard lives in
Arid-zona and doesn't have problems with salt laden roads?

The tool can be a big screw driver and a big hammer.... although I have
never messed with the fuel tank on an accord that had rusted up.... that
doesn't happen much where I am. The only thing that seems to rust on
accords here is the quarters where the bumper meets the rear wheel wells.

That's what I use, but not through an access hole in the trunk!

Have you really done it that way?
