I have an 89 civic hatchback. It wont run. I changed the main relay(brand
new). I was told it was my grounds. I redid all the battery wires and
added 2, 2" ground straps to the motor. still nothing. changed igniter,
cap, rotor. Nothin! I turn my key to the start position. NO DASH LIGHTS
COME ON! NO FUEL PUMP NOISE. I turn to start. it starts right away. then
dies. i checked al the fuses 5 times over. I don't know what to do. I also
re-grounded the motor harness. can anyone help me. and when i say the dash
lights don't come on. i mean pitch black. I was thinking the ignition
switch ir the the other 2 relays. can anyone help.

That sounds like the ingnition switch. When you turn to 'start' from
'run' there is a second path to the fuel pump relay which will provide
it with current while the switch is in the 'start' position. Try
pushing inward hard on the key. Sometimes that will close up an
ignition switch which is starting to come apart.

Why not do a google search for 'honda ignition switch'? Read all the
suggested symptoms that precipitated the HUGE recall several years ago.
Since your Honda is several years older (although you didn't mention the
mileage) and I think you'll decide that you should just change your switch.

If the older Hondas are the same as the new ones, the Owner's Manual
tells you what to look for when you turn the key to the various
positions. If the car's actions don't match the manual, the switch would
be the first place to start swapping parts, not under the hood....

ignition switch. if it starts, and you let off a little on the switch,
while still holding it, will it still run?

hard to explain... but turn to position III to start, then ease off
until its slightly ahead of pos II

but yeah, igniton switch. that explains the dash lights too

Ok, i posted a message last month. car wouldnt start. It was the ignition
switch. But now i go to start it. It still dies occasionally on startup.
the car gives off a real rich gas smell. and has a hard time starting. I
have replaced everyhting except for plugs and wires. could that be the
only problem. I havent adjusted the valves yet. its a jdm d15b. and does
the timing belt need to be adjusted for american spec. any suggestions
will help. they helped alot last time. thanks again everybody. PEACE

Spark plugs and/or bad sparkplug wiring could easily cause your problem.
By everything what do you really mean?
    ECU(or ECM)
    Distributor
    Distributor cap
    Distributor rotar
Injectors (could be leaking but not likely)
    PCV valve
Air Filter (a realy dirty one can cause this problem)
Oil and Filter change? (with an engine running that rich, your oil
is certain to be diluted with raw gas etc)
