92 Accord Transmission D4 indicator light

When I start the car, the D4 light used to come on and go off after
about 5 seconds. I think that was a normal trans check. Now for the
last few days it takes about 30 seconds for it to go out. When it
goes off, I can hear a click in the trans control under the passenger
floorboard. All of the above is while I am in park. Park light on
    dash is lit.

If I drive it in the first 30 second time period, when the D4 light is
on, it appears that the trans is slipping. When the light goes out,
it's fine for the rest of the day.

Another possible clue: For at least over a year, when driving
normally, the only position that the dash indicator does not light up
is D4. It's fine in all the other positions. Trans is still shifting
properly with the light not lit while driving in D4. If I downshift
to D3, the D3 light comes on. Up shift to D4, and the D3 light goes
off and the D4 light does not come on.

    Any suggestions? TIA

  2. you might want to get the ECU checked. I had problems starting out like
yours, ignored them, ended up paying for a ned (used) ECU.

From your description, I think it is possible that your gear
selector/shifter mechanism is worn out and not falling into the right spot
to both light the indicator and put your transmission into gear. These
things usually have bushings or detention mechanisms that can be replaced.
Does the shifter seem to be sloppy/loose while in D4? Can you wiggle it a
lot when in D4? When you wiggle it, does the light blink?

This problem has probably been brewing for a long time. You're
describing driving in third, when it 'slips'....

You could try a group search for ECU or 'tranny' and you'll find links
to a web site that repairs the capacitors that get fried with age, in
    your model.

One site I saw even tells you how to fix them yourself. Sorry, no link :-(
