    Hello,

I've been having a problem with my 92 Civic; last week it started
to fill with a strong sulfur smell after I had driven for about an
hour. When I opened the hood there was smoke (or I guess I should say
'steam') coming out of the battery casing. The battery had heated up
to the point that the acid was boiling over and evaporating . . . the
battery had a warranty so I replaced it, and the same thing happened
    with the new one.
I used a multimeter and found the voltage to be about 14.4V with
the engine off and 17.8V with the engine on (!) So it's obvious that
something is causing the voltage to be way too high, I just don't know
what it is. I don't see any obvious problems with the ground wire,
and there is no corrosion (brand new battery). Since two brand new
batteries have had the same result I can assume that it isn't a
problem with the battery. Other posts on here have mentioned possible
    problems with the alternator/voltage regulator??
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! Thanks, I
appreciate any help I can get.
