'92 Honda Accord Trunk Leak

Discussion in 'Accord' started by sharons*outlet, Jan 11, 2004.

  1. My car has developed a trunk leak. I found that the spare tire hadn't been properly put back so I corrected that problem. I don't see the trunk seal has any problems. I put a bag of charcoal in to help with the moisture. There was something that dropped in in from the trunk. It's blue, patent number on it, and a white center. Could this be the problem? If so, where do I look to put it back? Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure where your leak is coming from but, a common problem for
hondas of that generation (i've experienced it on my 91 civic, seen a few
others here w/ the same problem around 90-92) is the tail light gaskets..
Unscrew your light housings and take a look at the gaskets. if they're
rotted, that may be your problem.. Good luck!

  3. Thank you for responding. I took off the cover on one tail light to see if there was water, and it was dry. I didn't check a gasket.

Then buy new gaskets online or at the dealer's, or possibly wash off the old
ones, let dry, and apply a bead of silicone caulking on both sides on all mating
    surfaces.

I had to do this for the rear, left and right taillight and center light
    assemblies.

Water does not necessarily accumlate in the light assemblies when it's leaking
at the gaskets. Sometimes it only accumulates in the trunk.

  5. What is the center light assembly? What had me wondering was the blue round part with white in center that fell from the upper, top, part of the trunk. It was in the sack of charcoal that was more towards the hatch-back release area. Water is coming from somewhere. The carpet and cardboard covering the spare tire area is wet. Thanks for the replies. I'll try all of them.

I have a 92 Accord LX and the trunk leaked when I got it. I replaced the
tail light gasket (which I knew to be bad) and it helped. Although I am
still getting some water in the trunk, it is not nearly as bad. Look at the
comments from my posting about my leak in the list. Hope this helps.

  7. Thank you for your suggestion. I'll check the tail light gaskets tomorrow. This seems to be the main area to begin.

I meant the rear center (I guesss brake) light assembly. My 91 Civic has three
rear light assemblies: left, right, middle. I cleaned off the gaskets of all
    three and silicone-caulked all three.

My carpet and the cardboard (really, particle board) over the spare tire
routinely got wet, too. Also, one of the light assemblies would fill with water
    when it rained.

Some folks caution that the silicone, when it finally wears, is a pain to clean
off, so just buying new gaskets might be prudent.

I don't know if the blue round part you found is related.

Another thing you could try.. Fold down your back seats and get someone to
look into the trunk (w/ a flashlight) while someone else sprays the rear of
the car with water.. that might help...

.... does your car have a sunroof? I've heard that on some cars the drain
tubes for the sunroof go down the rear pillars and through the trunk to the
outside of the car.. perhaps there is a leak in on eof those tubes?

  10. Thank you. I had a feeling that the brake light was the rear light. I appreciate all the input. Wish me luck.
