93 Accord: Struts/Shocks question

Discussion in 'Accord' started by Michael Sutton, Jul 23, 2004.

  1. I'm thinking that's it's time to replace the Shocks and/or
Struts on my 93 Accord (172,000 miles). This vehicle is
primary a "commute" vehicle to drive on the highway to work
    each day.

It's still "holiding" to the road fine, but hitting bumps
or pot-holes at about 25 or 30 miles per hour is kinda like
riding in a 73 chevy worn out pickup (rough). At 70 or 80 mph,
you hardly feel them (speed I guess).

So it seems time to replace them? (right?)

    Couple more questions:
    ----------------------------
How can you "test" to see if they need replaced?

So what do I need to look for in what type and brand?

Any brands to stay away from?

Should I replace just the front or the rear also?

After replacing the front struts(shocks), should I get
    the tires re-aligned?

    Any other helpful advice?

    Thanks for any help.

Check your springs, especially the fronts, for corrosion while you're at it.

  3. The new strut can be uncomfortable to be in. The worn
struts gives you a smoother ride since the spring does most
of the comfort and smoothness. Check out your ball or
    rubber joints, instead.

How to test? Put weight on the trunk or hood and let go.
It should bob up but not down.
