95 Ody Intermittent Check Engine Light

In the last 2 weeks the Check Engine Light came on twice without any
symptoms (both times on the freeway).

As soon as I shut the engine off and turned it right back on, the light did
    not return.

    What are your thoughts? Thanks,

    Larry

Larry, your car isn't OBDII compliant, but you can read the 'flash
codes' yourself...(do a google search). Have you lost your gas cap, or
overfilled (intentionally) in the last while?

No sign of misfire / plugged air filter / overheating?

    Hi Curly,

Naw, everything seems ok. Gas cap, misfire, etc, are OK. On the net there
seems to be a lot of discussion about 4th gear torque converter lock-ups or
a longer than 1.5 second lock up tripping the ck engine light. As it is
only happening at freeway speeds, it is suspicious. Two questions regarding
    reading the MIL flashes-

    1. For 95, I need to hook up the SCS check connector. Is that something that
Auto Zone would have for me to use?

    2. The SCS service connector is located under the right side of the
instrument panel. Does that mean under the dash below the ignition switch??

    Thanks, Larry

Traditionally, a bent paper clip is used as a functional substitute for the
SCS check connector. The connector is under the left edge of the glove box,
just behind the bottom edge of the dash.

I am definately up for paper clip technology. Since I haven't used or seen
the SCS check connector, anything I need to know??

On the '96 (I assume '95 will be similar), there is a a receptacle for the
connector mounted to the back of the dash. Just look for a two pin
connector plugged into a receptacle that doesn't have any wires coming out
the other end and that will be the SCS connector.

To make it blink out a code, you short the connector, then turn the key to
the run position (warning lights on, but don't start the engine). The codes
range from 1 to 86. Let me know what you get and I'll look it up in the FSM
    for you.

To reset it (and clear the codes), turn the key to OFF, remove the SCS
connector (paper clip), and pull the 7.5 amp fuse marked "Back up (Radio)"
in the underhood fuse box for 10 seconds.

    ============================
    Larry,

There's two service leads under the edge of the (large) glove box.
They're plugged into a 'dummy' connector to keep them in place.

BTW, what shape is the tranny fluid in, and when was it changed
(completely)? The slow lock-up fault sounds like a good hint. :)

Will it blink out the code on the ck engine light or on the ECU? If the ECU,
    where is that?

    Thanks, Larry

It blinks the check engine light.

    OK, I did it.

It blinked 4 times slowly, followed by 3 times quickly.... 43??

Does that mean fuel supply system??

43 does mean fuel supply system. Unfortunately, my FSM is for the '96
Odyssey and they no longer used that code in '96, so my book doesn't give
any specific info on what to check.

The fuel supply system includes the tank, pump, sending unit, fuel lines,
    injectors & evap canister.

Since the evap system is included, I would start with checking the vacuum
lines connected to the evap & make sure the gas cap is good.

If anybody has an FSM for a '95 Odyssey or 4 cylinder Accord, now would be
    the time to jump in.

Regarding my comment from above.. "As soon as I shut the engine off and
turned it right back on, the light did
    not return"

Once the CEL goes on, is it typical (by design) that it stays on until the
car is turned off, even if the condition that triggered it is only momentary
    in nature?

    Thanks, Larry

I found a copy of the FSM and 43 has a bit of an analysis chart to it. In
general, it seems to be pointing to the O2 sensor but I have to check
voltages here and there to determine if it is a connection or wiring issue.
Does not seem to be trani related at all.

Since this CEL is so sporadic (2x in 3 weeks) should I not even worry about
    it??

Pull the fuse for 10 seconds and reset it. If it comes back on, then check
    it again & proceed accordingly.
