97 Accord Wagon central locking problem

    Hi,

I have a wierd situation with my central locking.

At the moment, using the key in any of the three door locks
(driver, passenger, tailgate) to *lock* the car works fine -
all five locks go down and the car is secure.

However, only the driver door lock will *unlock* all the
locks. The passenger door lock unlocks just that door, and
the tailgate lock doesn't do anything when you try and unlock,
    not even unlock the tailgate.

To make matters worse, the other locks do unlock all the
doors *sometimes*, but this is intermittent. As a result it's
pretty tricky to take the car to a shop as they might be
    working when I get there.

I have also had the passenger door window not working from
the drivers side controls sometimes, but that's intermittent too!
I don't know if that could be related.

Hoping someone has had a similar problem,
    Al

  2. Only a "generic" thought: check the wiring harnesse connectors where they
plug into the leading edge of each door and make sure each plug is fully
latched in, especially the driver's door. I had a Civic a while back where
the right rear window would only wind up/down, from the master switch or
its own switch, if the driver's door was ajar about half way.

The car had had a damaged driver's door (deer ran into the side of the car)
and the body shop broke the latch on the connector which plugs into the
door so that every time the door was opened, the connector got tugged out a
touch and then pushed back in a bit when the door was closed - I jammed it
in with some cardboard, not wanting to go to all the hassle of new wire
    harness routing.

Thanks for that George - in my case it was a motorcyclist who ran
into the side of my car, so that might be it. I'll take the panel off and
have a look when I get a minute.

On some Hondas, (you'd have to read the Owner's manual to confirm this),
the key doesn't behave the same in the driver's door, as it does in
other doors... for safety reasons. You have to hold the key in driver's
door for a couple seconds until it will unlock all. The passengers NEVER
unlocks all, IIRC. It's to prevent driver from unlocking the WHOLE CAR
    just to get in.
Also keeps the kids from unlocking the whole car from the passenger's
side, then locking just that one door and running away. Our Odyssey and
our CRV are totally different in the way they handle this, and it gets
    confusing to even describe it.

Be aware that the driver always has control over his own window, but the
other windows will play DEAD if the master switch has locked them OFF.
Your '97 wagon sounds just like out '95 Odyssey.

Have you read your owner's manual about all this stuff? The people who
designed it all very logically to prevent people locking the keys
inside, unlocking doors that shouldn't be, and keeping everybody safe.

  5. You shouldn't have to take any panel off - the connector plugs into the
leading edge of the door. Just open the door as wide as you can and check
whether the connector is fully seated and if you can tug it out due to
    missing latch.

  6. Oh yes it does on some - the passenger door keyhole on my '99 Integra
unlocks/locks the trunk and drivers door; the trunk keyhole unlocks/locks
all too; unlocking drivers only unlocks that one... and if you unlock
either the trunk or passeneger door and the driver's lock fails to unlock,
the system relocks all. I found that last out this past Winter when my
driver's door lock froze up. It depends on the model and in my case, this
was one of those with a centralized locking system but with no remote.

Mine definitely locks and unlocks all from the passenger and trunk,
as George describes. I have even read the manual!

    Al,

I was wondering if you've gotten RAIN in the control cluster on yor
driver's side. (it's in the door of our Ody, and I've left the window
down once or twice) Some corrosion could be giving a poor ground
connection, or inside the connector(s) of the module?

I had a fiddle with the connector and reseated it, and
haven't had any problems since, so I'm hoping that was
it. Thanks for the help, George.
