97 civic idle adjustment

I did an earlier post to this group but I think my servers been down so
here I go again. I have a 97 civic with the D16Y7 engine. The car runs fine
with no engine trouble codes showing.The problem is it idles at a very low
speed 300-400 rpm. The idle is very smooth and it never goes dead.Is it
possible to adjust the idle without going to a dealer? The first few
letters of the vin# are 1HGEJ6.Randolph did an earlier response and needed
this info I did a reply but somehow I don't think I got the info back to
him. Thanks..........Larry

 

For those familiar with old carburetor adjustments, note that the idle
adjustment screw is NOT the same as the throttle valve stop screw. The
throttle valve stop screw should not be touched under any circumstance.

At the rear end of the engine compartment, driver's side, there is a
test connector for hooking up a tachometer. The wire to this connector
is blue.

The following is from the Helm Service manual for the '96 - '00 Civic:

D16Y7 engine, 1996 - 2000: Adjust the idle speed using a Honda PGM
tester if possible. If not use the following procedure:

Note:
* Leave the IAC valve connected
* Before setting the idle speed, check the following items:
- The MIL has not been reported on
- Ignition timing
- Spark plugs
- Air cleaner
- PCV system

1. Connect a tachometer.

2. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3000 RPM with no-load condition
(In park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

3. Check the engine speed with no-load condition: headlights, blower
fan, rear defogger, radiator fan, and air conditioner are not operating.

Idle speed should be:

USA:
D16Y5 engine with CVT, D16Y7 engine with A/T, D16Y8 engine with A/T"
700 +/- 50 RPM (in "N" or "P" position)
D16Y7 engine with M/T:
670 +/- 50 RPM

Canada
D16Y7 M/T or A/T, D16Y8, M/T or A/T:

750 +/- 50 RPM

4. Adjust idle speed, if necessary, by removing the cap and turning the
idle adjusting screw 1/2 turn clockwise or counterclockwise.

D16Y7 engine: Note: When you remove the ACL housing, do not disconnect
the IAT sensor connector.

5. After turning the idle adjusting screw 1/2 turn, check the idle speed
again. If it is out of spec, turn the idle adjusting screw 1/2 turn
again. Note: Do not turn the idle adjusting screw more than 1/2 turn
without checking the idle speed.

6. Idle the engine for one minute with the heater fan at HI and the air
conditioner on, then check the idle speed.

Idle speed should be M/T, A/T and CVT: 810 +/- 50 RPM

Note:
* Do not turn the idle adjusting screw with the air conditioner on.
* If idle speed is not within specification, see symptom chart on page
11-84.
