'98-'02 Transmissions

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by David N. Makinson, Apr 28, 2006.

  1. Did the transmission problem exist in the entire model style, 1998
through 1992, or was it only a sub-set of years? Consumer reports only
shows an issue in 2000 and 2001.

If I purchase one of these cars, how can I be assured that Honda will
    fix the transmission, if required?

  2. 4-speed auto trannies on 1998-2002 V6 Hondas had problems, and Honda
extended the warranty on them to 7 years or 100,000 (I think) miles.

5-speed auto trannies on some 2002-04 V6 Hondas had issues too, but Honda
issued a recall for that. 2005 and newer seem to be OK.

The key word here is "V6".

Honda sent me a notice of warranty extension for my 2000 Accord SE
(4-cylinder). The notice begins, "American Honda is announcing a warranty
extension for the automatic transmission on all 2000-01 Accords, Odysseys,
and Preludes. The automatic transmission and torque converter are now
covered for a total of 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first,
from the date of original sale." No mention of which engine the vehicle has.

That said, the transmission in my Accord has always worked a little more
smoothly than the one in my '01 Odyssey. Neither has had to be repaired or
    replaced, though.

  4. I didn't know that they also extended the warranty on 4-cylinder models as
well. However, the vast majority of the problems were with V6 models.
