98 honda accord sometimes won't start

Discussion in 'Accord' started by jamesacaster2, Mar 12, 2009.

  1. I have a 98 Honda Accord EX V6 and am having problems when I start the
car. It started off by just not turning over, but the battery is
fully charged and the alternator checks out ok. Now it is starting to
make the sound a starter makes when you try to start the car and the
car is already running. Kinda like gears grinding. It starts with
some hesitation, but it finally starts. Does it sound like the
starter needs to be replaced? Any help would be great.

It could be the starter, but more likely the battery or the cables.

Check that the battery cables are tight and making good contact (at both
ends). If that doesn't resolve it, then take it someplace and have the
battery load tested. Most auto parts stores will do it for free. Just
because the battery shows fully changed, doesn't mean it can still pull a
    load.

  3. Thanks, I'll check that. What about the grinding noise that I am
    hearing?

If its actually grinding, that is usually the throwout bearing is not doing
its thing & you would need to rebuild or replace the starter, but it still
can be just a weak battery. If its just a clicking noise, that's pretty
    much always a weak battery.
