I took my 99 Accord LX V6 in for the safety recall, and it worked when
it came home, but within the week I lost the alternator ($300) and then
the speedometer ($500!). The car had not given a single problem in 120K
miles. Dealer said it was just a coincidence. Anyone else seen this?

Had the ignition switch recall (contacts could fail) done on my 99 Prelude
and two months later the timing belt tensioner started failing. Eventually
had to have it replaced. Is it just a coincidence or something more
sinister? (only kidding about the sinister part)

I realize that this won't help you--but I agree with you. I believe that
the mechanic screwed up and accidently shorted out some of the wiring.
However, I am only guessing. You should talk to the service department
manager about any appeal procedures that will force Honda to pay for the
    repairs.

  4. It's hard to wreck an alternator. You'd have to spill something nasty
into it or wire it up totally wrong with no fuses. Coincidence.

The speedometer could have been damaged while working on the ignition
because it's close by. Ask for the old one back and see what's wrong
    with it.

Oh boy, if I could just count the number of times my car ran worse after
a regular periodic maintanence visit to the Honda service center than
    before the visit!

    Which one?
There are 2 recalls involving the ignition switch; neither involves the
    gage assembly or the alternator.
Stuff happens, man, fix it; don't fix it, it's up to you, after all you
own the car. If you think the dealer screwed up, speak to them. If
you're still not happy, sue them in small claims court.

Good luck with that...while our court system is better than some other
countries, it is still a joke. You or they can file endless appeals al
the way up to superior court which could be locked in limbo for many
years and end up costing you more money and time than it is worth. And
that's if you get an honest judge or an arbitration panel.

The best thing to do is to take your business elsewhere and inform as
many people as you know what has occurred to prevent other people from
falling into the same situation as yourself.
