Or are they cup dumpers? Did I read somewhere that Honda makes an
adapter that stabilizes the cups in the holder?
My son said they don't hold the cup very well.

yes, you can go to the honda dealer and order the cup holder insert that was
included with the 2000 model. It is about $6

I find the cup holders in my 98 Civic extremely reliable. I like the
fact that it's low to the floor, but still within easy reach.

I doubt any cup holder will spill the contents of the cup, if the
vehicle is not moving. Unless you happen to be one of those
reckless drivers that drinks while driving? ;)

  8. I can't imagine driving without a drink (usually pretty hot in FL), but I'm
even MORE reckless than that! On long trips, I eat sunflower seeds. I keep
the bag of seeds between my legs and a small styrofoam coffee cup or paper
bag between the seat and the emergency brake to spit the seeds into.

And if no other traffic is around (long trips = 2 AM interstate driving),
I'll even steer with my knee to put in another CD (I can't listen to George
Jones - 16 Biggest Hits the whole damn trip)!

    Now, how reckless is THAT?!?!

Actually, the seeds help keep me awake, followed by many sips of Dr Pepper
to quench my thirst from eating salty sunflower seeds. I think I deserve a
    gold star on my forehead.

I usually have coffee cups in those cop holder. There could be some
spillage if the coffee cup is full and the driving is rough. The current
setup is great since all you need to do is drop the cup into the holder
without paying attention. I hate the idea of adding one of those
re-renforcer so that cub will snap into place, since you have to be
careful when you're putting the cop back into the holder (also taking
the the cup out of a 'grabby' holder can be a messy job). Even if there
is some splashing, it never gets on the carpet but only on the protected
rubber area around the cup holder. However, If the cup is extremely
tall, it might flip over, but a Grande Startbuck coffee cup fits
perfectly in both my wife's 2000 EX and my 1998 DX Hatch. Of the two
Civics, I like my Hatch's better since the seating position in the Hatch
is closer to the floor, which allows you to be closer to the cupholder
(with a more relaxed driving position). The 4 door automatic has a more
upright seating position and the shift leaver tends to be an obstacle
(assuming you're using the left holder instead of the right). Needless
to say, I'm extremely pleased with he cupholder on the older 2 door
Civic, especially the 96 to 98 model that comes with the cool mechanical
    lid cover.

i bought a honda OEM armrest a couple years ago that flips up and has
storage in it... big enough for a jumbo gulp! course, then you have no place
to put your right arm, but no biggie.

which civics came with the armrest? i know my CX hatch didnt.

Neither did the DX. The higher models probably has the armrest. I've seen the
armrest for sales on some Honda parts site at a reasonable price.. Personally, I
find it useless since it's too low to actually rest your arm on it.

  15. I find the armrest on the '03 Hybrid works fine for me. But then
I've found that most cars are built for someone my size.
