'99 CR-V getting crappy mileage

    Hi all,

    I have a '99 CR-V EX w/ real time 4WD that has - beginning a little over
a year ago - begin getting fairly poor mileage compared to where the
care was newer. I change the oil and filter regularly, have recently
replaced the air filter, have installed (and properly gapped) new spark
plugs, and recently had the wheels aligned. Still, I'm only getting
about 19 - 20 MPG. Never mind that I drive on the freeway 90% of the
time. I used to get about 23 - 25 MPG and for some reason, my mileage
    sucks now. :(

Can anyone suggest what might be causing me to get such poor mileage?

    Thanks

P.S. If it means anything, I have about 81,000 miles on this car.

    1. Check the tire pressure. This can seem trivial but makes a huge
difference in handling/gas mileage. (assuming you didn't change tire
    size/type)

    2. When is the last time you had the throttlebody, fuel injection,
    etc. cleaned?

    3. Any codes on the engine or just a general decrease in performance?

    4. When is the last time you had an alignment? If you are driving
mostly on the freeway and it's out of alignment badly enough, it may
(along with other things) decrease the performance as it's having to
fight itself just to get down the highway.

    ==================

It's not in the manual, but the valve adjustment on the CRV should be
done at 50,000 or less, to prevent burning valves, but you problem is
    more likely the PCV.

Your Dual Pump Fluid should also be changed after the first 30,000 miles
(it's also not mentioned in the manual.

    try hondasuv.com for further confirmation.

Change the PCV valve, if it's stuck the car will consume more gas
    (10-20% more).

A valve adjustment can add a couple miles per gallon. I have a 2001 CRV and
around town the typical mileage was 18-19 and 23-24 on the freeway. It has
38,000 miles on it now, but I had the valves adjusted at 33,000 miles and
the mileage jumped to 20-21 in town and 25-26 on the freeway.

Thanks to you, DragonRider, motsco, and cosmin for the advice. It is
    much appreciated.

I will start with replacing the PCV and then see about having the valves
    adjusted.

    Thanks again.
