I am looking to buy a new Accord but undecided between the 4 or 6 cylinder.
Your opinion please. Advantages and disadvantages.

My wife has a '99 Accord 2 dr Coupe and gets great gas mileage with the 4
cylinder, it also has plenty of pick-up.

Do you need 2 or 4 doors? Carry passengers? What's your driving habits?
I wish my Mustang had 4 cylinders cause the 6 cylinders uses some gas but
not a lot, it's also built for speed not mileage.

    I've owned 4-cyl hondas since 1982. I now have a 2001 V6, and I will never
    go back. I am spoiled.

PS, I still get 27-30 Mpg.

I have a 4 cyld. Accord and on a trip thru the Mojave dessert I got it up
to 130 miles per hour. It has all of the power that I need. However, if
you like lots and lots of power, buy the 6 cyld. The downside is that the
miles per gallon will be less with a 6 cyld. The choice is really up to
you. Test drive both of them.

  5. I've been shopping with the same dilemma. After driving a 4 first, I
drove a 6 and thought, this isn't all that much faster. But when I
drove a 4 again after that, it felt like a sewing machine! And the 4 is
a lot noisier, whinier. So now I know I'm going to stay with the 6.
The gas mileage isn't much worse. Plus I think the V6 is quite a bit
heavier and seems to improve the feel and stability of the ride. Wheels
and tires on the 6 are slightly larger also.

Made no difference in my insurance.

I also think the auto-tranny is MUCH smoother on the V6.

When new the 4 cyl seems to have lots of get up and go, but after a while
all that energy seems to downgrade a bit. The V6 has lots of power and
literally coasts on the highway especially when moving along at 70-80 mph.
Engine RPM is low in comparison with the 4 cyl with a corresponding
reduction in the noise level. Gas mileage is not that different. Overall,
    nothing like the V6.

  9. The 4 cylinder is fine, but the V6 is better. Has noticeably more power
and surprisingly, the mpg is quite good, although not as good as the 4
    cylinder.

Thanks Guys, I think I'll go with the 6 over the 4.
Should I go with the extended warranty or is this a very reliable. Does it
have any inherit problems like GM (former gm owner) such a leaky head
gaskets or GM's famous piston slap? Timing belt or chain?
How does the Accord stack-up to the Camry. Appreciate all response.

Can anyone comment on whether or not the premature transmission
failures for Accord V6s have been rectified yet? This might be a
consideration in chosing between a 4 or 6 cyl.

My 1999 Accord's transmission failed at 15,000 miles, and I had no
extended warranty. It failed earlier this year. Reason for the low
mileage was my mother was the previous owner and drove the vehicle
very little. Those who are regular readers here will recall when I
posted my story here. Much to Honda of America's credit, they
did cover about 90% of the cost of the new trasmission and gave me
a brand new 3/36 guarantee on the new transmission.

Save your money --no need for extended warranty unless you wear both
suspenders and a belt. Some folks just love that piece of mind however.

That's okay, just as long as you realize that the "extended warranty" is
not really a warranty. Rather it is nothing more than a mechanical
    breakdown insurance policy which:

    a) does not go into effect until your 3/36 warranty expires
    b) has a per-occurrence deductible
    c) does **NOT** cover the same things as your 3/36 warranty did
    d) has a few "weasel clauses" that lets them off the hook
    e) your chances of ever breaking even with the policy's high up-front cost
    is historically slim

Most likely your auto insurance carrier (State Farm & Allstate both offer
these) could have provided you with a similar policy for half or
    two-thirds the cost.

    Not criticizing, merely informing....

    .... I'm replacing a '98 Malibu with a '04 Accord 4cyl as my main family
vehicle. The Honda 4cyl makes the same horsepower as the 3.1L 6 cyl in the
Chevy. I didn't drive the 6 cyl Honda 'cause I know I'd have to buy it. I
did an extended drive in the 4cyl and found it has plenty of power for my
    needs.

I know what you mean about the inherit GM problems... that's why we avoided
GM like the plague when shopping for a new car.

I agree with you. Since I worry much more than the average person, I
purchased the extended warranty and don't regret it. When the "check
engine" light comes on--my heart no longer skips any beats and I don't
have an anxiety attacks. If you are like me--purchase the extended
    warranty.

    Not so.

Those things that are not included in the standard 3/36 warranty (for
example, a rental car) *do* go into effect.

The deductible is optional. For an additional sum, you can have a $0
    deductible.

The Hondacare warranty is exclusionary; i.e., if the problem is not
    specifically excluded, it is included.

Note that this is not an endorsement. I did not purchase a Hondacare
extended warranty on my 2003 Accord. Just setting the record straight,
or as you put it, not criticizing, merely informing.

I got the V6 and love it. for gas mileage I get between 23 and 28, depends a
lot on how you feel like driving. I think I got a good price by going to the
Honda web site and sending out requests for bids from dealers in my area. I
paid $23211 for a EX V6 with destination took about a hour to buy the car.

The first three years are covered by the new car warranty so you pay for
something that you're getting for free. The extended warranty is.a big money
maker for the Dealer--I never take it.

Hooray for you. I look at it as a 4-year, 64,000-mile warranty which buys
me some peace of mind. Can't really put a price on that.

You can't go very far wrong either way.

The six will cost you another $50-$80/month for payments, gas,
insurance, registration. I got the four, it goes zero to 80 fast
enough for me that I seldom even get on the cam, probably don't draw
over 100hp in an average week. The six would be more fun, but unless
    you're driving high-speed, up-hill, at-altitude, with three
passengers, with the air conditioning on, you don't *need* it as such.
Very reliable. By the time the standard three-year warranty is gone,
you should be well past any unlikely factory problems.

Anyway, I recommend you simply lease it for three years, let someone
else worry about it after that! Check out the pricing versus a
purchase loan, and I think you'll agree.
Reliability about a push. Performance about a push. Honda tries to
be just a few degrees faster and more sporty, Toyota tries to be just
a few points more cushy and quiet.

The way I see it, buying a Honda is like joining a cult, buying a
    Toyota is like buying groceries.
