Accord keyless entry - trunk release problem?

The keyless entry remote for my 99 Accord recently quit working - it's
happened intermittently in the past, but this time it was dead. Took it
apart to check the battery, and noticed that one of the surface mount
chips had come apart and was rattling around inside the case.

Rather than pay $100+ for a new one at the dealer, I picked up a used
replacement for a fraction of that, and in short order had successfully
programmed it to operate the door locks using instructions easily found
elsewhere on the net. But I cannot get the remote trunk release to work
with the new remote. The trunk release button on the remote appears to
be operational, as I can use it (as well as the lock button) to program
the remote to operate the door locks, and the remote's LED lights up
when I depress and hold the trunk release button.

I don't think it's a cable or lock issue, as I can't hear the trunk
release solenoid clicking when I depress the remote button. I did get it
to work once today, when I opened the trunk manually using the key, then
closed it and tried the remote button successfully. Further tries did
    absolutely nothing, unfortunately.

Anyone have any experience troubleshooting remote trunk release
mechanisms? Any suggestions as to other things I should try?

Go to the EBSCOHost pages mentioned by Tegger:

    http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/tsb/

Look for the programming sheets that are about 18 -22 pages, covering
all remotes used in North America on all Hondas. It's a Honda document.
It will also tell you if you bought the wrong version of the remote.
There's two versions for the remote for the CR-V between '97 and '01.
Your symptoms sound like the CR-V ones if you get the wrong remote.

Many thanks - I'd forgotten about that. I got the relevant TSB from the
EBSCO site, but the solution actually turned out to be in one of the
"Export Service Bulletins" on Tegger's site. Fortunately for me, the old
and new remotes were identical, however, according to the ESB, if you
program a third remote into the system in addition to the two that came
with the car, you have to push the trunk release button twice before it
will open, and there's no way around this. I experimented a little and
determined that a normal, quick press followed by the usual press-and-
    hold worked just fine.

I only got one remote when I bought the car used - if I'd had the second
one, I wouldn't have had to chase down a replacement. I didn't realize
at the time that it was supposed to come with two remotes, or I'd have
insisted that the dealer provide a second one.

In addition to the relevant TSBs mentioned by Curly, there's a Google-
    cached page here:

    or a similar PDF here:

Too bad you didn't get an owner's manual with your car too. The dealer
knows that the owner's manual has a notice inside the front cover that
states: _The owner's manual is to be considered a PART Of THE CAR and
should be included with the car when sold_

The manual tells you what's supposed to come with the car, including the
jack, spare tire, keys, remotes, etc.

Why not demand they provide you with a manual for free?

I had the same problem with a '98 Accord. Apparently there are two kinds of
remote, one that works with the trunk, and one that doesn't. The one I got
from the dealer for $75.00 doesn't work with the trunk, and one from Ebay
for $15.00 that does. They are identical. The part numbers are the same. The
dealer swears that there is a problem with the trunk that he can't find or
fix. Find one on Ebay that says:"For a '98 or '99 Accord EX"

    Should've done that too - hindsight's 20/20. I wound up getting an
owner's manual on eBay for about ten bucks later. I've never had too
many reason to complain about after-sale service at Honda dealers, but
I've found that even with the certified used vehicles they'll
occasionally try to get away with not providing things like that which
are part of the car if you don't call them on it.
