There is a reason (analog) speedos are tick-marked at 5-10 MPH intervals...
they are only that accurate (usually +/- 5MPH). The best thing to do is
have it checked (accurately, with radar), and compensate for the difference.

The speedometer on my 1989 Honda CRX Si is exactly right when I have
compared it to those "you are now driving X MPH" electric signs.

I use the stock tire size of 185-60-14.

  3. The speedometer on my 1998 Accord EX V6 Coupe reads 8.4% faster than
the actual vehicle speed. The car has stock size tires on it. I first
noticed the error by comparing it to another car and confirmed it by
timing over a known distance. The odometer reads correctly. I plugged
my laptop computer into the OBD (On Board Diagnostc) port using an
OBDII Automotive Scan Tool and Virtual Dashboard from
http://www.obd-2.com/ which gives me a display of the vehicle speed
directly from the car's computer bypassing the speedometer head. I
went for a drive and recorded the speedometer and computer readings at
10 kph intervals. (Interestingly, the laptop vehicle speed was in mph
while my speedometer is in kph.) I analyzed the results and came up
the 8.4% error. I contacted my local Honda dealer and got the same "if
it is within 10% it's good" line that others have heard.
I can correct the error using a Yellow Box speedo re-calibration
device made by and available from http://www.blackrobotics.com/ in
Australia or from http://www.ricks2k.com/products/yellowbox.php in the
USA. I just have to decide if I want to pay US$100 to have what I
consider to be a manufacturing defect fixed.

the problem being? youre an undercover cop, and need a calibrated speedo to
    catch speeders?

maybe they need a speedo perfectly calibrated for every tire and wheel
combination theyll ever offer on the car?

ill bet you that when your gas gauge reads a half tank, there isnt really
half a tank in there either...

    aint *that* a pisser?

you oughta ask for a new car :)
