anyone ever get a "finder's fee"?

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by George Of The Jungle, May 2, 2004.

  1. Last year I bought a new '03 Accord V6 coupe, which I am very happy
    with.

A couple of weeks ago a friend called me and asked how I liked it, how
it was running, etc., and I let him know. He mentioned he had been
looking at both a used '03 and new '04's, and just wanted my
    experiences.

A couple of days later, I went in for an oil change, and asked him if
he would like to be contacted by my salesperson, and so while I was at
the dealer, I put the two in contact, not really thinking if anything
would happen. When I gave the sales person his name and number, he
mentioned that if my friend bought a car I would get a "finder's fee"
    from the transaction.

Well, a couple days later, I found out that my friend did buy the car.

    My questions are:

    1. How much is the typical "finder's fee"? I'm sure this varies quite
a bit, but anybody ever get one?

    2. How long should I wait, or do I need to persue this a bit more
    actively?

    Thanks in advance!

Back in '91, I referred my brother's close friend to an Acura
dealership who also bought the same type of Integra as my brother did.
I didn't expect anything but the salesperson offered a finders fee. My
information was taken and I got a check in the mail for $50.
It took about a week. If it's been a while, perhaps the salesperson
lost track of it. I'd get in touch with him telling him how your
friend is really enjoying his new car and that he also asked if I did
get my finders fee. Hope you get yours.

My dealer when he sold me my new Civic told me about a new referral plan
he was going to put me on.He said that if I referred a friend to that
dealership and he mentioned my name when he purchased a vehicle they
would send me a $125 check........but so far I have not made any future
    referrals to date.

  4. Call your salesman, and feign ignorance; ask if your friend ever stopped
by to look at the car. This will just boost your salesman's memory a
    bit.

I get free oil changes when I refer people. Hey, why not. I think it
comes out of the salesman's pocket. He probably buys them wholesale
    from the service department.

If you don't get anything, don't fret it. You really weren't expecting
anything until the salesman raised your expectations, right?

A *good* salesman won't let this slide. An average salesman won't
remember it. You'll do more damage pursuing this agressively than it's
    worth.

In 1970, I got three record albums.
I wasn't even one of the car purchasers. My sister bought one, and our mom
took us down so she could pick it up. The salesman gave the "if there's
anythin I can do..." line as we were getting ready to leave, and I told him
my mom wanted a new car, now that my sister had one.
My mom bought. somewhere during the conversation, the guy was chatting
about music. When we picked up car number two, he had the albums.

It was more than I expected to get.

More recently, a co-worker took me down to pick up my new Honda and bought
a Honda at the same dealer about a week later. I didn't mention a
    referral, he didn't mention a referral. I didn't get anything ;-)
