its there for a reason. eventually, itll add stress to any part thats
mounted to both engine and frame, like the wiring harnesses and exhaust.

    for
I worked on a rear wheel drive buick that had a broken motor mount. To move
it into the shop I eased the gas pedal down so as not to roll the engine, it
rolled anyway and the throttle linkage went full open. I could have wiped
out the shop if I had not had my hand on the ignition key. It can be very
dangerous. When a mount is broken the the throttle can do strange things.

Is this a serious problem? Someone told me they have had theirs broken for
over a year and there is nothing noticable other than it doesnt idle as
    smoothly.

In my old 85 cutlass, I used to constantly rip the rubber portion of the
engine mounts (and transmission mount.. the metal portion of the mount
is still intact which keeps the engine from popping out of the hood when
revved) because of my very aggressive driving. The car feels more stable
after getting the mounts replaced. Those old V8 rear drive were able to
take the extra wear and tear from a broken engine mount, however the
modern uni-body cars might be a different story. Note: engine mount has
never broken in my 98 Hatch...even with my wife's dismal failure at
trying to learn standard on the poor 5 speed.
