Canadian Civics

Discussion in 'Civic' started by Ernest Cassirer, Apr 4, 2004.

  1. Anyone know why the Canadian Civics seem to have more features than U.S.
market ones? For example, in the Canadian ones,if one puts on the defrost
setting, the AC comes on, and the AC light as well. In the U.S. ones, the AC
comes on as well, but the light does not come on.

My Liberty,Ohio built 99 Civic EX (built for the US market) has the AC light
and AC turn on when the defroster is turned on. The AC acts as a
dehumidifier, which is why it goes on.

Strange how the AC works with the defrost.

I did a check the see what the difference, used the LX as an example. The
air-bags are the law here, so all cars will have them after 1998 (or around
that time). The LX in Canada is pretty much loaded, like ABS, AC, and power
everything. Perhaps the small car market is a bigger chunk of the pie, with
higher gas prices, and less disposable income, so I am thinking there is
more competition in the small car market, so offer more, or lose out.

Check out this site, I like it a lot, the prices are Canadian, but if you
scroll down to the quick search, pick passenger car, then chose the price
range from $10,000 to $20,000, where you can compare a few car features side
by side as well as the Civics.

Wrong. Airbags are **NOT** required by Canadian law. The NHTSA in the US
    DOES require them.

Transport Canada rigged the head-injury numbers in order to make it
difficult for automakers to pass the official crash-tests without an
airbag. They NEVER made bags mandatory. They figured if they jiggered the
test right, they could force automakers to install them without having to
    go through the regulatory process.

Automakers found that they had to install them in at least the driver
position to make the numbers pass.

There are a number of vehicles that are/were sold without a passenger-side
airbag up to the present model year. The Hyundai Accent is one, the Toyota
    Tercel is another.

It is not illegal to disable or remove airbags from a Canadian vehicle.
Most garages will disable the bags for about $40, no permit required.

Insurance companies neither penalize for the absence of airbags nor give
discounts for having them. You do not need to inform your insurance company
if you have had the bag disabled.

Insurance companies are decidedly ambivalent about having bags installed as
they cause an inordinate number of expensive injury claims.
