i wondering if my 2001 accord ex/v6 auto was able to tow a 1200 car
    with a class 1 hitch.....

i'd be towing a VW beetle with a special towbar that doesn't put any
weight on the rear of the car, kinda like pulling the car with a rope,
but in this case a metal rope....

    i won't be often, maybe 1 or 2x a year

i can't find any towing capacity for the accord online, and kbb.com
doesn't rate the accord for towing

1200 lb is like 6 passengers. It won't have a problem. Towing capacity
should be in the manual, like it used to.

  3. Even the old beetles weighed just under 2000 lbs, not 1200, if I understood
    your meaning.

Your brakes are not designed to stop that much mass. Also, the towed
vehicle will push the back end of your honda around like a hockey puck
when you apply brakes. It is not even legal in most states.

Yes, in the manual it says 2000 lbs towing, and 200 lbs tongue weight.
You may want a transmission cooler, depending how far you're driving
    those few times a year.

The brakes will be fine as long as you *don't* drive normally... you
    have to accelerate and decelerate s l o w l y...

There should be a section on towing in your owner's manual as a couple
other posted have suggested. I skimmed it in my '93 Accord manual and
recall this additional guideline: if towing for any substantial
distance (or with any frequency), engine oil change intervals should
be decreased--that is, if under unencumbered conditions the change is
every 3,500 mi, then if towing for some duration, the interval should
be something less than that. Please consult your manual.

Yep, good call. Just checked an older NADA guide, looks as if they
stopped selling the older beetle in the United States in 1979, and for
that year it seems the only model was the Convertible 2D which weighed
    2059 lbs., MSRP US$6,800.
