Car shudders, headlights dim and brighten on ignition

    I have a 99 Civic LX automatic. On starting the engine, the car
    sometimes shudders, the headlights if on dim and brighten repeatedly,
    sometimes it stalls, other times it "recovers" on its own. The shudder
    etc does not happen always: often the car starts normally - I coudnt
    detect any pattern. I used a multimeter on the battery when the car
    idles (this was on a "normal" day) and it showed about 15V with the
    headlights off and about 14V with them on. What could be the problem?
