I plan to buy a 1999 Honda Accord, could someone here please check the vehicle with the following VIN for me. JHMCG5648XC801833 You can either post the CARFAX report to this group or email to: . Thank you very much in advance! ---- Weiji

We ran a report on the Civic we bought and it came back as saying the car was a winner and it had no back story. The car definitely had a back story that didn't show up in the report. People can fix cars without claiming the damage. Look at the vehicle very closely and know what it should come with. IOW, get familiar with the year you're interested in so you know its features and such.
Make sure that you have a written sale contract. And if the other party says that the car was never involved in an accident, have it written down. Don't rely on Carfax... My dad's 99 Accord EX was in a major collision that cost over $11,000 to repair the entire back end of the car last January, which was covered by insurance (the insurance carrier does report all claims it pays to the appropriate data services). A good friend bought a Carfax subscription, so to check its accuracy, we ran this Accords VIN in the system and it came back with nothing to report. After seeing that, I would only trust Carfax to give me data about prior owners, dmv reported data and where the car has been.
Thank you all for the suggestions. I will let the sales person write down what he says in the contract. ---- Weiji
--------------------- Weiji, You're in Saskatchewan... Pay SGIII for a registration search. It will show each time it was registered, and where (but not names), as well as other info. Any Honda dealer will tell you the exact date of sale and WHERE (ie: Lachine, Quebec) it was sold, as well as a listing of all the in-warranty repaiir claims that were made. Think twice if it lived in Quebec... 'Curly' --------------------------------
Thank you very much for your good suggestion. I will go to SGI tomorrow to do a registration search to see what it turns out. ---- Weiji
Hi, Curly: I did a VIN search at SGI yesterday. It turned out that the car was previously registered in Quebec. Neither a total loss nor a salvage vehicle, but no history of accidents/claims were shown in the search report. What do you mean "Think twice if it lived in Quebec..." in your post? Is there a different procedure of insurance claims for cars involving the accident in Quebec from Saskatchewan? and there is no record of claims/accidents for a vehicle regsitered in Quebec. I will make my final decision after you clarify the above doubt. Thank you very much for your suggestion. I am looking forward to getting your answer. Best regards, Weiji
---------------------------- Weiji, Cars from Quebec can have terrifically high rates of corrosion on the exhaust system, the suspension, the 'hidden' places, anything aluminum, etc. I presently own a Honda that came from Quebec, and there's parts of the exhaust system that look like they were boiled in sulphuric acid. You can't even tell if some of the bolts ever had heads on them. Electrical problems can happen too, because a tiny bit of salt can eat a LOT of copper, especially inside the alternator, the signal lights, and the high mount break light (ours was eaten through). For a 'handy guy' this is not a big concern, but if you're not handy, or if you want transportation that is more reliable, a 'prairie car' might be a better investment. A Victoria (B.C.) Honda might be the best. I owned a Volvo from there and it had NO RUST on it. In that vintage, that was unheard of. 'Curly' --------------------------
Thank you very much for your clarification! 'Curly'. I will take a second and close look regarding the rust problem before making the final decision. Thanks again. Weiji
