I have a honda civic 99 sedan lx. Recently, my engine check light went on. Also, sometimes, when I put it in 3rd gear, it feels like it stalls. I brought the car in for a check and the mechanic said my oxygen sensor has to be changed. a brand new sensor costs $220.00. Is it important to change. please respond

Get a Bosch, around $80.00 at AutoZone

Depending on the car and exact O2 sensor malady, this can destroy the catalytic
converter. Then we're talking over $500 of repairs. Plus, your fuel mileage may
    worsen soon.

    A 1.6 liter 4-door Honda LX O2 sensor runs $64 to $138 at
http://www.honda-auto-parts-wholesale.com/. The price depends on the brand you
want. Dunno if brand is important with O2 sensors. Hopefully others will
comment, or you can do a search of Usenet. Shipping's free at this company.
There are a few other online Honda parts dealers.

If you need the O2 sensor connector, add on $239.

I suspect your mechanic is talking about the sensor only.

An OEM sensor with the connector WILL cost $220.
However, if you are willing to do some splicing, you
can use the OLD oxygen sensor connector and splice
it into the new oxygen sensor for ~$80. A bad oxygen
sensor WILL also cause stumbling, as it becomes too
"lazy" to adjust the correct air/fuel mixture in time and
your cylinders end up with too much air and too little
    fuel.

Wrong. Bosch sells O2 sensors with the OEM connector, no need to splice it.
