"Check Engine" light returns

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by ryan.g.williamson, Mar 9, 2006.

  1. My check engine light was on a few weeks ago, and although it took
about a week, it finally went off, so I figured the problem must've
been a loose gas cap or something. Well, after a few days, the light
just came back on. I haven't refilled my gas tank or anything
recently, so I'm afraid this is going to be an expensive problem. Any
    tips?

  2. Take your car to Autozone and have them read out the codes; they will
do it for free. That will give you a general idea of the problem.

  3. Yeah, Auto Zone gave me the code last time, so I knew the problem was
with the EVAP system. It was code 1457, if I remember correctly (I
could go find my original post, but I'm lazy). So now I'm hoping to
    figure out more specifics.

    Talk about duct tape.

  5. Do you mean to duct tape the gas cap threading? I'd think a teflon
tape or plumber's tape would work better, if that was indeed the
    problem.

But that might set him back a week's wages! He might have to get a fulltime
    job after that setback.

    It's not a gas cap.. A P1456 would likely be a cap, but a P1457 is a
leak between the tank and engine. canister vent shut valve , 2 way
bypass valve, purge control solenoid or the hoses involved.

  9. So when I tried to fill up my tank today, the pump kept automatically
shutting off. I managed to coax it into giving me about half a tank,
but it must've shut off a dozen times in the process. Think this is
    related?

Could be a bad ORVR valve then

  11. Could it simply be that I tried to top off my tank and splashed gas
    where I shouldn't have?

you too; any decent newsreader will thread articles and make it trivial
to see what he was posting his message as a followup to.
