Civic Trans Input Shaft

Discussion in 'Civic' started by Frank van Hoof, Oct 2, 2003.

  1. Folks: Does anyone know if the input (mainshaft) of the manual transmission
turns with the vehicle coasting in neutral with the clutch pushed in?

I'm still doing this damn noise diagnosis, and several listers
have suggested this as the cause of my problem. However, the noise carries
on while coasting in neutral with the clutch in. So, if mainshaft is still
under these circumstances, I'm down to thinking it's my driveshaft or wheel
    bearings.

Frank had a similar problem on my 97 civic. I would say the input shaft
bearings are probably bad. I could not figure out what the noise was
for months. I did a test on it. I would coast down a hill in gear with
the clutch in and would hear the noise but when the car was in neutral
with the clutch it was silent. The input shaft will turn if the car is
in gear but it will not turn if it is neutral. Hope this helps JAY
