cold weather and starts

  1. Check the battery fluid levels regularly and make sure you never leave
any light on, no matter how small. Keeping the battery in good
condition and fully charged keeps the sulfuric acid concentration up so
    it won't freeze as easily.

0W-30 synthetic might make cranking easier.

Heaters are an option if an outlet is nearby.

  2. Like I said, certainly not here. I noticed the OP had posted from a Carlton
University (Ottawa, just like me) account, and I knew that a wind chill
warning was announced because of a -43C overnight temp.

  3. Brrr... I'll stay here in the SF Bay Area and ride out the earthquakes.
By comparison, our cold weather warnings are called "frost advisories."
That means that some areas might fall below freezing overnight. 10W-30
    is good oil here :)

  4. Well, the -43C was the windchill, the actual air temp was a balmy -34C.

    0W-30 works here.

Tim, rather than a spare battery, get a jumper pack.
Much better, easier to handle, and can be used for other things.
Mine has an emergency worklight, plus a power inverter. I used the latter to
charge my camcorder battery between race sessions last weekend.

As for ensuring it will start, make sure you have a 100% battery, with plenty of
CCAs, and then clean and check all the connections, at both ends of the cables.
Learn how to do a voltage drop test to check the connections.

    |this post is directed to fellow friends that live in areas where the mercury
    |drops to < -20C,
    |
    |so i've been noticing it's a little tricky starting my car (temp just
    |hit -40C). i've got the suggested 5W-30 oil and jumper cables in my car.
    |my car is parked in a garage at night *not heated* wondering if there's
    |anything else i can do to ensure my car reliably starts in this insanely
    |cold weather. i was thinking of buying and storing a spare battery just in
    |case my battery decides to crash and burn at the most inopportune moment.
    |even though Acura's are made in Japan, i'm hoping Acura has taken into
    |account the ridiculous weather we Canadians get!

    |
    |thanks.
