Are roof rails on the CR-V attached to sheet metal roof, or are they bolted
    into the frame?

I have not personally observed how my roof rack is attached. But according
to this Honda accessory web site it appears to be attached to factory
installed threaded mounts incorporated into the body. I doubt that it
relies only on the sheet metal. See the foot note concerning the
possibility of paint on the mounting threads:

    I hope this helps.

That is helpful. I worried that a strong cross wind could come along & rip
not only my kayak & rack, but also the sheet metal of the roof as well. You
appear to be right; the rails are anchored to the frame of the CR-V.

It's all sheetmetal, but the rails connect to the rain gutters (you
cut the rubber to fit them in).
