I have a 98 CR-V that I want to trade in. It has 113K miles, but its still
in really good shape (needs new tires though).....I just need a larger
vehicle or else I would keep it.

I'm being told by dealers that because it has > 100K miles that it is not
worth much. Best offer I got was $4,000. But when I look at dealer resale
value at various web sites for similar CR-V's (ie > 100K) I don't see
    anything below $7,500.

Am I getting the typical shaft from the dealer regarding trade-in value? Or
is the $4,000 a valid offer.

After working on this for a few weeks - my head is starting to spin......

    since you don't mention whether it's a LX, EX, 4WD, 2WD, 5 speed, automatic....
    assuming it's LX 2WD automatic:

    Trade-in value (kbb.com):

    Fair: $4435
    Good: $5430
    Excellent: $6000

So, $4000 isn't that far off. But you'll always get more selling privately. I'd
advertise it in the paper for at least $6000. I'd also try ebay, CR-Vs are
popular here in (So. Cal) and yours would probably fetch $6-7K.

    Ooops..sorry about that:

    It is a '98 CR-V LX 2WD, automatic, w/roof rack, AM/FM Cassette, and tinted
    windows. 115,000 miles.

You'd do better selling it yourself. What you've heard is basically
true....they'll just wholesale the vehicle off to one of those shady used
car ops who uses their own in house financing and warranties. Third party
extended warranties are not easy to find on vehicles with > 100,000 miles on
them...another profit center for the dealership.

  5. MikeY,

Find some good web pages on car detailing (sorry I don't have any links
to offer), and buy some (lotsa) armor-All, some turtle Wax, and get to
work. Avoid smelly air freshener devices. Vacuum a lot too. You could
pay somebody else to detail it for you, if it's not worth your time.

Then sell it thru your local Auto Trader newspaper, or daily newspaper.

  6. MikeY,

Further to my suggestion to detail and resell it yourself, here's a link
    I came across:

    http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Detailing/Detailing.htm

If you want to be able to say "It's in spotless condition", this page
can help. These guys are totally nuts on perfection, but there's some
    good pointers.

Trading in with dealers is a rip off. Yes, you are getting the shaft, and
the dealer will get something he will get to sell at a great profit. CR-Vs
are one of the hottest cars on the market (new or used). My experience with
CR-Vs is they don't last on the lots or in the papers when they go up for
sale. Do yourself a favor. Clean it up nice, maybe put new tires on it and
post it in the paper and on-line--I doubt you will be waiting long. Take a
good look at www.kbb.com to get a good estimate.
