I have just bought a 1990 CRX which has compartments for speakers at the
rear. Can anyone suggest what kind of speakers I need, and how to fit them?
There is a big plastic fitting with four screws around the edge of each
speaker compartment- are there speakers that will fit this exactly?

There are basic/standard sizes for car speakers...yours probably are
one of them. You need to measure the area to narrow down your options.

The general rule is: If the area for speakers is a circle, it's
    probably for a 6-3/4" speaker (or a 6-1/5"), but if it's
    oblong/ellipse, it's most likely for a 6" x 9" speaker.

Even after knowing that, you have to match the power handling (watts)
of said speakers to the stereo installed or else you'll get more
speaker than you need or not enough speaker.

    But that's another topic...
