this is the spark plug from a 97 integra gsr that was changed about 20k
ago. The electrode looks fine, but I wonder if the black ring near the
threads means anything. My car has a little bit of pinging even though
I run 91 octane, and it has a knock sensor. I dumped some water down
the throttle body a while ago, and I guess that didn't cure the problem.

Looks normal, some carbon will migrate to the lower plug threads.

no. the plug is fine, but high mileage. if it's pinging, try a
different brand of gas, /after/ you've had the timing checked. if it's
still pinging, check the knock sensor & its connection.
